Symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person and sometimes and may be indicative of a condition other than Dyslexia but here are some of the symptoms that MAY be associated with Dyslexia.

  • Pages of print can resemble a visually stressful pattern- for example print can look very “stripy” and words may appear to move on the page when viewed.
  • Words may be uncomfortable to look at and therefore interfere with the ability to read or interpret what is written.
  • Lines of text may need to be re-read several times.
  • Print may appear blurred.
  • Eyestrain may be experienced during reading.
The Intuitive Colorimeter Test

The Intuitive colorimeter was developed by Professor Arnold Wilkins and the Medical Research Council and is fully supported by research studies and peer reviewed controlled trials. The colorimeter is an instrument that is used by a trained specialist to find, from a selection of over 100,000 tints, the optimal Precision Tint for an individual.
At Wigram and Ware have been conducting colorimeter tests and prescribing overlays and tinted lenses for over 20 years and have unrivalled local experience in this field.

We initially conduct a short 10 minute assessment that is made at the same time as the basic eye test. If the results are positive the individuals optimal Precision Tint is then selected using the Intuitive colorimeter at a subsequent examination lasting about 45 minutes.

We can then incorporate this tint into a pair of spectacles together with a prescription if required.

The optimal colour that will benefit each individual can change over time, especially with children. We will be happy to review our patients progress during their regularly scheduled eye examinations to ensure that they are achieving maximum benefit from their tinted lenses. Research has indicated that tinted overlays or spectacles can help some individuals who have reading or interpretational difficulties caused by visual stress.

Cerium Coloured Overlays are now being used with great success in many schools and colleges as well as in Optometry practices and hospital eye departments. Tinted spectacles are more versatile and can be provided with an individually tailored tint as opposed to the limited number of colour overlays that are available.

Wigram and Ware have been supplying Cerium Coloured Overlays and tinted lenses for over 20 years.
