What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry Eye Syndrome or DES is a common issue for many adults. Your tears protect and lubricate your eyes, and this condition affects this process. When your eyes don’t have enough moisture, they may become irritated. This can cause inflammation and damage to your eyes.
Our tears are responsible for lubricating our eyes to keep them healthy and nourished. The tear film consists of three components: oil, water, and mucus. Each of these components is essential to maintain the quality and quantity of the tears.
A problem within any of these essential components can cause an imbalance within the tear film and affect tear production – consequently leading to Dry Eye Syndrome (DES).
Approximately 80 percent of Dry Eye Syndrome cases are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
The meibomian glands are the oil glands that line the edges of your upper and lower eyelids, at the base of your eyelashes. These glands secrete the oil (meibum) that coats the eyes and tear film, to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly.
Meibomian gland dysfunction is a common condition that occurs when the meibomian glands become blocked with thick secretions, preventing oil from flowing freely into the tear film and affecting its quality as well.
When MGD becomes a chronic problem, it can cause permanent damage to the tear film and lead to Dry Eye Syndrome.
Factors that can contribute to or exacerbate the symptoms of DES may also include:
Windy, smoky or dry environments
Staring at a computer screen or mobile device
Contact lens use
Taking certain commonly prescribed medications
Lasik surgery and cataract surgery
Blepharitis
Autoimmune conditions such as Rosacea
Hormonal changes
Natural ageing
Initial Consultation and Dry Eye Assessment
We conduct a full comprehensive eye examination including OCT scans/retinal photographs/ pressures and visual field analysis and discussion of any spectacle or contact lens requirements you may have.
In addition, we will perform a full evaluation of your tear film with regards to quality and quantity, lid margin health, tear producing glands to understand why you may suffer from dry eye using the following procedures:
Dry eye pre-examination questionnaire – this helps us understand and track the improvement in your symptoms
Detailed history and symptoms
Tear film Topography – maps exact areas of tear break up
Non-invasive Tear break up assessment – to measure the speed at which your tears evaporate
The aim of our specialist dry eye clinic is to evaluate your tear film with regards to quality and quantity, lid margin health and tear producing glands, to understand why you have dry eye and how best to alleviate your symptoms using the latest and most appropriate treatments available.
Following the Initial Assessment if we feel that you are suitable and will benefit from IPL we will schedule your first treatment.
How many visits will I require?
This varies depending on the type and severity of your dry eye. In most cases 4 treatment sessions will be required 3-4 weeks apart, followed by an annual review/top-up.
